Kingdom Housing

History

Kingdom Housing Incorporated (KHI was established in February 2006 by Reverend Debra Rhodes and Deacon Melvin Rhodes, a Navy Veteran. Their journey commenced amidst the bustling streets of New York City, where Deacon Rhodes, employed by the New York City Transit Authority, personally observed the harsh realities faced by homeless and displaced veterans – an experience that stirred compassion within him.

Fueled by a shared commitment to make a difference, Reverend Rhodes, a Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor, caseworker, and shelter manager, joined forces with her husband. Their mission was clear: to address the pressing issues of homelessness, mental health disorders, and substance abuse affecting veterans.

In Poughkeepsie, NY, KHI emerged as a testament to their dedication. Partnering with the Montrose Veterans Administration, the organization carved a niche by offering tailored services for veterans, filling critical gaps in the social service system. The acquisition of a twelve-unit building became the cornerstone of KHI’s efforts, providing not just affordable housing but comprehensive support services.

As the organization grew, so did its impact. A second location was established to broaden support services, offering food, counseling, and clothing to the veteran community. KHI expanded its reach to underprivileged communities, becoming mentors to families and children. Additionally, recognizing the need for specialized care, the organization introduced SAR sexual assault counseling.

KHI’s history is a testament to the power of compassion and the impact individuals can have when united by a common goal. The Rhodes’ legacy lives on through the transformative work of Kingdom Housing, a beacon of hope for those who served and sacrificed for our nation.
